About
The Practitioner
Caroline graduated with high honors in 2010 from the Classical Chinese Medicine program at the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR. Prior to her current career in Chinese medicine she worked for the University of Oregon for 10 years as a Child and Family therapist where she offered coaching and support for families in the Portland public school system. She runs a family style practice and often sees multiple generations in the same family, sometimes all at once.
Caroline practices the older style Classical Acupuncture as opposed to TCM, or Traditonal Chinese Medicine, which was created in the 20th century and is the main style taught in many acupuncture schools. The primary difference between the two being that Classical acupuncture uses a variety of diagnostic techniques to identify the specific imbalance in the individual in addition to their illness or injury and tailors a treatment strategy that treats both the illness and the individual person. Additionally, in Classical Acupuncture the success of the practitioner is dependent on his or her ability to influence a patient's qi by having cultivated a degree of strength and sensitivity in their own. Since 2013 she has been studying qi sensitivity practices, acupuncture and body work with Andrew Nugent-Head, a teacher who learned these methods over the course of more than 20 years living in China.
In addition to studying the Chinese medical classics, Caroline is an avid student of anatomy and movement. Caroline has extensive experience treating physical injuries in all bodies; from elite athletes to the elderly. She has also been treating women during pregnancy since 2012 and has worked in collaboration with a number of doulas and midwives to offer prenatal and post-partum support to mothers.
She is grateful to the many teachers who have generously shared their knowledge and experience with her, in particular Dr Edward Neal and Andrew and JulieAnn Nugent Head who have made the classical texts come alive in a tangible way and Sifu Gregory Fong who first guided her on the path of martial arts and internal cultivation.
Outside of work Caroline is often found playing with plants to make her own medicines, cooking and cycling with her children, and enjoying life in Long Valley, NJ.
What makes Bodhi Acupuncture unique?
What makes Caroline unique from other acupuncturists is her specialization in treating the sinew meridians [經筋]. She has studied specific techniques to release tension in the fascia. These techniques are more successful than pure trigger point therapy and results in rapid pain relief, greater range of motion and faster healing.
Caroline offers a range of treatment modalities for her patients, from dynamic myofascial release to gentle needle free treatments where she uses acupressure instead of needles. She practices several forms of bodywork, cupping and gua sha, as well as moxibustion.
Acupuncture
Caroline uses observation, palpation and pulse diagnosis to create individualized treatment plans. She uses a variety of needling techniques to release obstacles to healthy qi and blood circulation and return the body to a state of balance.
Acupressure
& Massage
Caroline has trained under accomplished doctors to learn to use her hands to regulate the qi flow in her patients. This technique is especially effective in restoring circulation, calming the nervous system and regulating directional impairments in qi flow; perfect for those who don't like needles.
Cupping
and Gua Sha
Cupping uses the process of suction to bring blood to an area and release large areas of muscle tension. It also promotes lymphatic drainage. Guasha 'combs' the surface of the muscles to encourage circulation and relax superficial muscles.
